Back to Hannibal: The Return of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry
Finn: Tom, a lawyer, and Huck, a journalist, are reunited as adults
to help defend their friend Jim against charges of murder.
This appears to be a TV movie
made by Disney, probably for The Disney Channel. Although this
movie doesn't have anything to be ashamed of, it doesn't have
much to be proud of either. Although more entertaining than your
average episode of Little House on the Prairie or Dr. Quinn, it
has none of the wit or charm associated with Mark Twain's original
"Tom & Huck" stories. But that should go without
saying. I can't imagine anyone over the age of 12 enjoying this
movie unless he or she happens to be a fan of one of the actors.
Mitchell Anderson plays Huckleberry Finn. Everybody knows
what Huck is like. I can't say this is how I would picture Huck
as an adult, but I think Mitchell Anderson does a decent job within
the confines of the script. The best thing about this movie is
that he smiles a lot, something he doesn't often do in movies.
Seeing Mitchell Anderson play Huck, I can't help but think
that maybe there is something to the essay "Come Back to
the Raft, Huck Honey" which analyzes the homosexual undertones
in Twain's novel.
